WasteX lab is an innovation initiative implemented by UNICEF and UNDP in Zanzibar which intends to integrate innovation in the solid waste management ecosystem by using circular economy approaches. The program employs a Centre of excellence (COE) at SUZA Computing building which entails a group, shared facility, or institution that focuses on a specific and provides leadership, best practices, research, support, and/or training. The two UN organizations, UNICEF and UNDP are the champion in this initiative.
WasteX Lab as a whole is an innovative program; hence its office should reflect that aspect. The programme will reflect to the technology innovation environment which supports coworking, collaboration and entrepreneurship where flexibility, freelancing and innovation are encouraged. To achieve this goal, UNICEF will support the lab with equipment ranging from computers, servers and other supportive devices and UNDP will renovated the SUZA allocated innovation Hub. The two Organization will also support the Solid Waste Management Challenge where students and other innovators will get a chance to present their idea and some of them will be hosted at the hub.
